Though some areas are loosening their stay-at-home restrictions, others are still confined to their homes—no gyms, no outdoor restaurants, no bars. And though this gets frustrating, it’s an important way to stay safe and healthy. That said, you may feel a bit burnt out from your at-home workout routine after all this time. You probably never expected to have to exercise at home for this long. But, we’ve got what you need to light a fire under that butt and find some new motivation to stay in shape. Below, we’ve compiled a guide to some of the best workouts you can do at home to stay in shape. From dance routines to outdoor HIIT workouts, this list is just the creative boost you need to keep moving through the summer!

An Outdoor HIIT Workout

If you’ve been doing a lot of strength training, you should give your body something else to focus on, like a HIIT workout. You can follow routines that you find on the internet, or you can compile your own with some of your favorite moves. Make sure that you warm up before you dig into the workout itself. A lot of HIIT workouts don’t incorporate a warm-up or cool-down, and those are essential for a successful workout. Jump some rope before you begin or go on a walk around the block; get those muscles warm. The sunshine will help with that!

If you want to learn ballroom dancing, you can start by looking into some videos online while classes are still postponed. If you’re more of a hip-hop lover, there are plenty of studios offering their classes online. Maybe you want to get into Jazzercise—well there’s plenty of that too. Because of the coronavirus, more and more dance studios, clubs, and organizations are putting their classes online (most of them free) for you to enjoy. If you don’t feel like following someone else, turn on your favorite playlist and groove for a while. Even if it’s just for fifteen minutes a day, dance has incredible health benefits, both physical and mental, that’ll keep you healthy through the summer season.

Strike Training

A lot of people turn to boxing, kickboxing, and other similar methods to get their workouts in for the day. But with gyms closed, that’s kept a lot of people from their preferred sweat sessions. Nonetheless, you may still be able to get your anger and energy out even from home. As we mentioned, a lot of businesses are offering online classes, so you can follow along with some strike training classes that way. Though you’ll have to be careful with technique—proper form for punches, jabs, uppercuts, kicks, and other strikes—as it can be quite easy to get hurt or strain your muscles.

Maybe you’re not ready for the hardcore world of Jiu-Jitsu right now—that’s okay. You can build up your endurance simply by taking some cardio kickboxing and cardio boxing classes online. Look it up online and see which type of exercise fits your needs and skill level best.

Looking for a chill workout that’ll still get your body working hard? Yoga is just what you need for those days when you need a break from your normal routine. Maybe it’s a rest day or you’re still super sore from your workout the other day. No matter the reason, there’s a yoga style that will fit your needs. Here’s a quick look at some different yoga styles:

  • Kundalini Yoga: a spiritual focused practice that delves into chanting, mantras, breathing exercises, and other more challenging poses.
  • Vinyasa Yoga: one of the most common styles—it can come in various intensities, from slow to dynamic to mindful.
  • Hatha Yoga: these classes will include a mix of asana (poses), pranayama (breathing exercises), and meditation. It’s often considered a catch-all term for the physical side of yoga.

Since it’s summer, why wouldn’t you want to go and enjoy the sunshine? Sure, you may not be able to get to the gym, but that doesn’t mean you can’t even breathe in some fresh air. Summer provides us with tons of activities that get your heart pumping and keep you in shape. In fact, these nature workouts are some of our favorite workouts you can do at home to stay in shape. Go on a long bike ride, go to your closest nature preserve, and hike some hills. Head to the water and kayak or canoe. Utilize all that nature provides us and get moving!
